If you are a physician who has difficulty getting verification of past or present employment or staff privileges or if you’re just in a hurry to get a medical license; this article is for you. Often times, the states that require verification of employment and/or staff privileges are the ones that take the longest to process. This can be especially grueling for doctors who have an extensive practice history or who have done locum tenens. It can be almost impossible if a facility can’t or won’t provide the requested verification. Maybe the place has changed hands or is closed. Perhaps you had a conflict with a supervisor while there. Whatever the reason, you may want to opt for licensure in a state that does not require verification of employment and/or staff privileges.
These States Do Not Require Verification of Employment and/or Staff Privileges:
Alabama, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma (MD only), Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont (wants a letter from your current chief of staff), West Virginia and Wyoming.
These States Require Verification of ALL Employment and Staff Privileges:
You may want to avoid applying for licensure in Arkansas, District of Columbia and Mississippi. If you are a DO, you should also avoid New Mexico and Oklahoma. These states often take the longest time to process an application and issue a medical license.
Other State Requirements Vary
Minnesota requires verification of staff privileges for the past 10 years but not employment. Nevada has the same requirement for MDs but only if you’ve had an issue with a facility or licensing board.
The South Dakota Board sends their own employment and staff privilege verification requests. They usually go back about 10 years.
Colorado, Delaware, Louisiana, New Jersey, Oregon, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin all require verification of employment and staff privileges for the past 5 years. New Mexico and Arizona have the same requirement but only for MDs, not DOs.
Alaska, Idaho, Iowa, Missouri and Washington require verification of staff privileges for the past 5 years. They do not require verification of employment.
Hawaii only wants staff privilege verifications for the past 3 years.
Florida, Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island require verification of your current staff privileges. Same for DOs applying in Nevada.
