Did you take a State Board Examination in lieu of FLEX, NBME, NBOME or the USMLEs? If so, you will need to jump through a few hoops before the Florida Board of Medicine will issue a medical license to you.
If you are currently licensed in the U.S. or Canada and have actively practiced pursuant to such licensure for at least 10 years, then you only have to pass the SPEX examination to qualify to practice medicine in the state of Florida. Here is the link to our blog about SPEX for more information.
Throughout the years I’ve assisted many doctors who were applying for a Florida Medical License so they could retire to the warm and sunny state and still have the option to practice. If you were licensed on the basis of a state board examination prior to 1974 and have practiced pursuant to such licensure for at least 20 years, then you only need to be currently licensed in at least three other jurisdictions in the U.S. or Canada to qualify for a Florida Medical License. No worries if you are only licensed in one or two states. There are many states like Michigan and Pennsylvania where licensure is quick and inexpensive.
Keep in mind that you will be required to have a valid ECFMG Certificate or to have completed a 5th Pathway Program if you are a Foreign Medical School Graduate. Doctors who graduated from a US medical school will are also required to complete 1 year of accredited postgraduate training. Foreign medidcal school graduates are required to complete 2 years of ACGME accredited postgraduate training.
