SPEX
SPEX is the Special Purpose Examination. It is a computerized, multiple-choice examination of current knowledge requisite for the general, undifferentiated practice of medicine. The examination is intended for physicians who hold or have previously held a medical license in the US or in Canada. The questions used in SPEX focus on a core of clinical knowledge and relevant underlying basic science principles deemed necessary to form a reasonable foundation for the safe and effective practice of medicine. SPEX covers clinical encounter categories (well-care/preventive medicine; acute, circumscribed problems; ill-defined presentations or problems; chronic or progressive illness; emergency conditions, critical care; and behavioral/emotional problems) and physician tasks (data gathering; diagnostic assessment; managing therapy; and applying scientific concepts). A medical licensing board may require SPEX if you have not taken a qualifying or re-qualifying examination, such as USMLE or an American Medical Specialty Board Certification. SPEX may also be required if you are a Canadian physician wishing to practice in the US or after periods of professional inactivity or disciplinary action.
