The South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners has recently sent a notice out regarding restricting prescribing for doctors who practice via telemedicine. Here’s the notice that was sent:
“In follow-up to the BME’s previous eblast regarding prescribing controlled substances via telemedicine:
South Carolina state law restricts the prescribing of Scheduled II and Schedule III narcotics via telemedicine when the physician-patient relationship has been established solely via telemedicine. Specifically, under South Carolina law, a practitioner may not prescribe Schedule II or Schedule III narcotics without an in-person visit prior to prescribing; once the in-person physician-patient relationship has been established, a practitioner may prescribe, or renew, or refill Schedule II and Schedule III narcotics via a telemedicine visit.
The South Carolina Telehealth and Telemedicine Modernization Act” can be found here: https://www.scstatehouse.gov/sess125_2023-2024/bills/4159.htm“
