THE IDAHO MEDICAL BOARD OFFERS AN APPLICATION FOR THIS PATHWAY.
Idaho is accepting applications for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) that qualify as an international physician, as defined in Idaho Code §54-1803, may receive a provisional license.
“International physician” means an individual who:
- Was not a legal resident of the United States or Canada when they attended and matriculated from an international medical program.
- Has been granted a medical doctorate or substantially similar degree by an international medical program of good standing.
- Has completed a residency or post-graduate medical training.
- Has practiced medicine as a physician in good standing with the regulatory institution in such individual’s home country for at least three (3) years after the completion of post-graduate medical training or completed at least five hundred (500) hours of clinical experience under direct physician supervision in a clinical setting in the United States.
- Has practiced medicine within the last five (5) years or has a waiver from the board.
- Possesses basic fluency in the English language as demonstrated by a passing score on the occupational English test for medicine or other equivalent exam approved by the board.
How to Qualify
IMGs must meet the following conditions to be considered for a license:
- Fingerprint-based criminal history background check.
- Proof of graduation from an international school of medicine and post-graduate medical training
- Proof of practice in the international physician’s home country or clinical experience pursuant to section 54-1803(12)(d), Idaho Code.
- Proof of employment as a physician at any sponsoring entity that operates in the state of Idaho and employs a supervising physician.
- Proof of passing score on the United States medical licensing examination (USMLE) 1 and 2.
- Proof of a passing score on the occupational English test for medicine or other equivalent exam approved by the board.
- Proof of federal immigration status that allows the international physician to work in the United States.
- Proof of Identification (a clear and readable color copy of a government-issued photo ID such as a passport, valid driver’s license, or military ID). If the name provided on this application does not match the name on the required documents, please provide a copy of proof of name change (i.e., marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order showing the transition of name).
